Lance Armstrong drops drugs fight

This summer has been dubbed the ‘summer of sport’ with the Olympics, Paralympics and of course the new Premiership season getting underway. There have been highs, but the words ‘drugs’ and ‘cheat’ are never too far behind. Great Britain cycling has definitely been put on the map. When it comes to sport, whether in the school playground or at the highest level is it really the taking part that counts or the ‘win-at-all-cost culture’, mentioned by the United States Anti-Doping agency (USADA) chief executive Travis Tygart? The astonishing fall from grace of Lance Armstrong has shocked many. It was in many ways the ‘American Dream’, when Lance survived testicular cancer to go on and win his Tour de France titles between 1999 and 2005, but what does it mean now?  Is he innocent or guilty?

Ironically, Armstrong has never officially failed a drugs test nor admitted guilt. He is accused of using illegal steroids and EPO, a hormone that controls red blood cell production. The USADA claims to have blood samples of Armstrong containing banned substances and statements from previous team-mates dropping Armstrong right in it! When a champion is stripped of their title, it is then awarded to the person who came in second place, but a lot of these cyclists have admitted, been accused or convicted of taking drugs too!

We must remember that Lance Armstrong has not admitted taking illegal drugs during his career, but waived his right to contest the charges. I honestly don’t know what to believe, I would like to think that there are some people out there who are naturally talented at physical sport and achieve great things (and indeed there are), but now it seems that more and more athletes take drugs in order to win, win, win! It is a sad scenario that will never really be settled as Armstrong is not contesting the case, but whether he is innocent or guilty this cloud will always hang over him – it is true what they say; ‘It’s like riding a bike, you never forget’ and nobody will forget this scandal!

  1. Excellent non biased reporting there, difficult to do when you have suspicions that they’re all at it!
