With the first week of the Olympics over, I think it is fair to say that it has been an exciting few days. All week Team GB have been bringing home the gold but I think the heroics of the weekend were the highlights of week one. Jessica Ennis winning gold in the heptathlon, Mo Farrah in the 10,000m, Greg Rutherford in the long jump, off the track Kat Copeland and Sophie Hosking in the lightweight women’s double scull, Andy Murray put his tearful Wimbledon loss behind him, Ben Ainslie winning gold in the sailing…… and the list goes on!
So hats off to Team GB, but the other stars of the weekend were the Jamaican sprinters. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the third woman to successfully defend her 100m Olympic title, Yohan ‘The Beast’ Blake and of course Usain ‘lightning’ Bolt. On the eve of 50 years of independence for Jamaica, the stage was set and 20 million Britons tuned in to watch! With the amazing achievements witnessed so far; comments from Conservative MP Aidan Burley, calling the Opening Ceremony as ‘multicultural crap’ and the antics of a Lithuanian basketball fan labelled the Olympic Nazi by a newspaper after performing a Nazi salute in the direction of two black stewards, seem distant memories. From the commentators, to Team GB and the host city of the Olympic Games – London, diverse ethnicities are apparent and multiculturalism in Great Britain should be celebrated.
Let the Games continue, with more medals for Team GB, as well as great displays on the track. After the amazing win in the 400m for Kirani James (Grenada), a comment from BBC commentator John Inverdale, that the 400m race was basically the West Indies vs. a family from Belgium, the question of familial heritage playing a role in sporting success still lingers. In the next Olympics or two will there be any gold medal rowers or swimmers of African descent? Will there be gold medal sprinters of European descent? Only time will tell, but for now there is a new era in sprinting, where the once dominant continent of the USA has to make way for the sunny island of Jamaica. David vs. Goliath? We all know who won that battle! Anyway, the streets of London 2012 are paved with Olympic gold, so far so good!
